Jacobs Foundation Announces Laureates of the Klaus J. Jacobs Awards Endowed with 1.2 Million Swiss Francs

PR Newswire

ZURICH, October 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ –

  • The Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize 2011 goes to Professor Michael Tomasello, Co-Director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany
  • The Klaus J. Jacobs Best Practice Award 2011 is bestowed upon Christiane Daepp, founder of the Swiss program “Ideenbüro”

The Zurich-based Jacobs Foundation, an international foundation in the field of child and youth development, has announced the laureates of the two Klaus J. Jacobs Awards 2011, endowed with a total of 1.2 million Swiss francs. The developmental psychologist Professor Michael Tomasello is the recipient of this year’s Research Prize, while the Best Practice Award goes to the founder of the Swiss program “Ideenbüro”, Christiane Daepp. Both prizes will be presented during an awards ceremony on 2nd December 2011 at the University of Zurich.

Born to cooperate

The central findings of Professor Michael Tomasello’s research show that even one-year-old children who cannot yet speak are capable of cooperating and helping other children. This behaviour exists without being taught by adults. Professor Tomasello’s comparative research into communicative behaviour and learning processes of preschool-aged children on the one hand, and those of the great apes on the other, provides evidence that humans are born to cooperate – and that this is a primary difference between humans and great apes. Young children do not perceive space, quantity or logical correlations any better than great apes do, but they are able to learn more easily with others and can recognize the intentions of others more quickly. This is the primary basis for the ability to speak. The Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize 2011, endowed with 1 million Swiss francs is a spur for Professor Michael Tomasello’s future work in his research field: “The money allows you to do some research things that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. In particular, it allows you to plan larger research projects with a greater time horizon.”

Cooperation at school – Schoolchildren acting as problem-solvers for fellow pupils

During her career as a teacher, Christiane Daepp realized that children are excellent listeners and problem solvers. On the basis of this knowledge, Christiane Daepp founded “Ideenbüro”, a program in which schoolchildren help their fellow pupils solve problems. “Small children are impressed by older children and depend on their behavior rather than listen to well-intentioned advices of adults”, explains Christiane Daepp. “This is the reason why consultations at the Ideenbüro are so efficient and effective.” The “Ideenbüro” is the contact point in a school for all types of problems, ranging from bullying and vandalism to the troubles that arise in pupil-teacher interaction. The children in charge of the “Ideenbüro” take responsibility for solving problems independently and participating in the social community.

The Klaus J. Jacobs Awards

In honour of its founder, the entrepreneur Klaus J. Jacobs, who passed away in 2008, the Jacobs Foundation has awarded two annual prizes since 2009. Endowed with a total of 1.2 million Swiss francs, the prizes recognize exceptional achievements in research and practice in the field of child and youth development. The Klaus J. Jacobs Research Prize acknowledges scientific work of high social relevance to the development of children and young people. The Jacobs Foundation attaches great importance to scientific findings from interdisciplinary research which can yield practical applications. The Klaus J. Jacobs Best Practice Award recognizes the exceptional commitment of institutions or individuals who put innovative solutions in the field of child and youth development into practice. The Best Practice Award is endowed with 200,000 Swiss francs.

About the Jacobs Foundation

The Zurich-based private Jacobs Foundation was established in 1988 by entrepreneur Klaus J. Jacobs. Ever since, the foundation has focused its efforts on the development of children and youth. The Jacobs Foundation supports research projects, intervention programs and scientific institutions with 35 million Swiss francs per year. As far as its methods and approaches are concerned, the foundation is particularly committed to scientific excellence and evidence-based findings. With its investment of EUR 200 million in the Jacobs University Bremen in Germany (2006), it set new standards in the area of private funding.

IEC, a woven label manufacturer based in Istanbul – Turkey, is offering its services beyond France. In the year of 2011, the Company sold quality woven labels to over 100 companies in France.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY, October 13, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ — IEC, a woven label manufacturer based in Istanbul – Turkey, is offering its services beyond France. In the year of 2011, the Company sold quality woven labels to over 100 companies in France. The Company has done well and has decided to over its services to customers all over the world. Interested parties who would like to buy quality woven labels can visit the Company’s website for more details.

About IEC

IEC is a pioneer in the textile industry with over 12 years of experience. It is currently the market leader in the domestic market and it’s also starting to service international markets as well.

The Company is successful due to its ability to listen to customers. It is then able to invest resources in the right technology to ensure that production lead time is as short as possible. Shorter lead time without compromising on quality is what customers are looking for. For this reason, IEC is meticulous about production schedules. The Company also invests in the latest technology to ensure speed and quality. The Company produces over 400 million woven labels in domestic and international markets.

Product offerings

The primary product of IEC is woven labels. Woven labels can be used on all sorts of products such as clothing, handbags, accessories, etc. In addition to woven labels, the Company also produce products such as laser cut labels, embossed labels, hang tags, printed labels and plastic labels. In other words, a customer can trust IEC to deliver all sorts of different labels. Varied product offerings arise out of the different needs of the market. Some clients may decide to buy printed labels, but others may want to buy woven labels. Each type of label has its own unique characteristics.

Woven labels are extremely durable. They are made from high quality threads and can display both texts and images. Since texts and images are woven on to cloth, they automatically inherit a slightly three dimensional look. This helps to draw attention to the label. For this reason, many clients like to use woven labels for corporate logos and marketing slogans. In addition, woven labels do not fade easily due to frequent washing. They also do not peel off easily. Some customers prefer to use woven labels on work clothes such as coveralls. This is because work clothes tend to get dirty easily and heavy washing may be required to clean the clothes. Yet, despite heavy washing, woven labels remain intact.

Then there are clients who want to buy labels for products such as handbags. Woven labels add class to the existing design as customers tend to associated quality with woven labels. In other words, woven labels are used for branding purposes. Good brands tend to use such labels on their products.

For more information on woven labels, please visit the Company’s official website.

Confused.com Reveals Motor Maintenance Ignorance Endangers the Safety of Others

Posted Thursday, October 13, 2011 by admin

Confused.com has revealed that many British motorists know very little about car maintenance, putting themselves and other road users in potential danger.

CARDIFF, WALES, October 13, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ — Confused.com has revealed that drivers know very little about car maintenance with a worrying 72% unaware how to check brake fluid levels, leaving them in potential danger at the wheel.

Moreover, 69% of motorists have no clue how to check their engine coolant, a fluid which prevents a vehicle from overheating and if left unchecked can cause serious damage to the motor.

In fact, 57% of drivers don’t even know how to change a tyre, while 47% are also unable to even locate the jack.

As Car Care week kicks off, Confused.com is urging drivers to take the time to get to know their motors and keep their cars roadworthy in a bid to keep Britain’s drivers and pedestrians safe.

Motorists are so laid-back about car maintenance that 48% haven’t even looked at their car manual, but with over 28.5 million cars on the road, Brake the road safety charity and Confused.com are urging drivers to love their cars more in a bid to cut down on accidents.

Katie Shephard, spokesperson for road safety charity, Brake, said: "Driving is one of the most dangerous things people do on a daily basis. It’s vital that all drivers are doing regular maintenance checks of their vehicle to ensure they are safe on the road. Shockingly, five people are killed and a further 65 are seriously injured on UK roads every day. Brake urges all drivers to check their vehicle regularly to ensure they’re not endangering their lives, and the lives of innocent road users."

Gareth Kloet, Confused.com Head of Car Insurance added: "Car maintenance is essential. We all love a bit of TLC so don’t forget your cars need a helping hand to. A lack of car maintenance can cause road safety issues and 72% of drivers don’t know how to check their brake fluid. If a car has insufficient brake fluid, air can get into the brake lines and your vehicles ultimately could stop working and cause serious problems, not only for you but also for others.

"Make sure you do regular checks on your car and also ensure you have breakdown cover just in case the worst happens.Shop around for the breakdown cover you need as costs can vary greatly between providers; a comparison site is a great way to do this."

To encourage the nation to care for its cars, Confused.com has put together a car maintenance video offering a solution to some of the problems highlighted.

The Seven Year Itch Is Still Around

The median age of separation for U.S. marriages is seven years, with divorce happening after around 8 years of marriage.

October 13, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ — The Seven Year Itch Is Still Around

Marriages That End in Divorce More Likely to Begin At Seven-Year Mark

The phrase "Seven Year Itch" was first coined in the 1952 play of the same name and made famous in the movie adaptation starring Marilyn Monroe, who tempts a married man of seven years by, among other things, standing on an air vent in a billowing white skirt. While certainly much about 1950s living arrangements have changed, the 2010 U.S. census revealed that marriages are still more likely to encounter significant trouble around the seven year mark. The median age of separation for U.S. marriages is seven years, with divorce happening after around 8 years of marriage. This is true for both first and second marriages that end in divorce.

Why do people who divorce call it quits after seven years? The 1950s movie focused on infidelity, but marriages end for a variety of reasons. Financial stress, job responsibilities, raising children and simply acknowledging that problems in the marriage will not get resolved can all prompt separation and divorce after seven years. Anthony Centore, the director of Thrive Boston Counseling and Psychotherapy, told the Boston Globe that due to the pressures facing some marriages it is a "miracle they last seven years."

The length of marriages ending in divorce is one of the few things that has not changed since the 1950s. As one example, marriages are beginning later, with women waiting until 26 to marry and men waiting until 28. Regional differences are significant, however, with people in northern states more likely to wait to get married; one reason, perhaps, that more divorces occur in southern states.

Divorce Considerations

Some marriages are vulnerable right from the beginning. About one in every 10 marriages will end in divorce in the first five years. However, certain financial considerations brought about by the Great Recession may be extending marriages that would otherwise have divorced. If the couple has children, for example, and it would be difficult to find a housing situation similar to the couples’ existing home, the couple may delay divorce until economic conditions improve.

A family law attorney can explain the divorce process to those considering whether it is the right option for them. The many financial considerations and family circumstances surrounding a divorce make obtaining an experienced divorce lawyer essential to maintaining a similar living situation post-divorce.

“Best Lawyers” Names Craig R. McClellan San Diego’s 2012 Product Liability Litigation Lawyer of the Year

Craig R. McClellan of The McClellan Law Firm is named San Diego's Product Liability Litigation Lawyer of the Year for 2012 by Best Lawyers.

SAN DIEGO, CA, October 13, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ — Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession, has named Craig R. McClellan as the "San Diego Best Lawyers Product Liability Litigation Lawyer of the Year" for 2012.

After more than a quarter of a century in publication, Best Lawyers is designating "Lawyers of the Year" in high-profile legal specialties in large legal communities. Only a single lawyer in each specialty in each community is being honored as the "Lawyer of the Year."

Craig McClellan is a product liability attorney with over 90 verdicts and settlements in excess of $1 million each. His landmark cases have resulted in the removal of 3 wheel all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) from the market, and the addition of shoulder harnesses in the rear seats of automobiles.

Additionally, San Diego lawyer Craig McClellan has been instrumental in SUV rollover safety, litigating more SUV rollover cases, for instance, than any other San Diego lawyer. He was the first San Diego lawyer to advocate Electronic Stability Control (ESC) systems for SUV’s and to bring suit for a manufacturer’s failure to provide that essential safety system. He has handled many cases against automobile manufacturers that have received national and international attention.

"I am quite honored to be recognized by my peers for the work that I am doing on behalf of my clients to make automobiles, and all products, safer," Craig McClellan said.

Best Lawyers compiles its lists of outstanding attorneys by conducting exhaustive peer-review surveys in which thousands of leading lawyers confidentially evaluate their professional peers. The current, 18th edition of The Best Lawyers in America (2012) is based on more than 3.9 million detailed evaluations of lawyers by other lawyers.

Craig McClellan is being honored as "Lawyer of the Year" because he received particularly high ratings in our surveys by earning a high level of respect among his peers for his abilities, professionalism, and integrity.

Steven Naifeh, President of Best Lawyers, says, "We continue to believe – as we have believed for more than 25 years – that recognition by one’s peers is the most meaningful form of praise in the legal profession. We would like to congratulate Craig R. McClellan on being selected as the ‘San Diego Best Lawyers Product Liability Litigation Lawyer of the Year’ for 2012."
