San Francisco Mayor Lee Unveils New Logo & Vision at SF’s Asian Art Museum

The Asian Art Museum introduced a new look and artistic vision Tuesday morning, as San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee joined museum director Jay Xu to unveil the museum’s new brand and logo that aims to engage a broader audience and spark connections across cultures and through time. The museum’s new look represents a bold step forward, as the museum repositions itself as a place for all to experience Asian art and culture from a new perspective, not simply through the presentation of art objects, but by delivering art experiences that spark new creativity and thinking.

Mayor Lee, Jay Xu, and Anthony Sun, Chair of the Asian Art Commission and Asian Art Museum Foundation, opened a bright red curtain to reveal the logo, developed by international branding consultants Wolff Olins. In introducing the branding, Director Jay Xu emphasized that, “The Asian Art Museum is for all people.” The logo, an inverted “A” accompanied by the word “Asian,” also references the mathematical symbol that denotes “for all.”

Mayor Lee enthusiastically supported the museum’s new vision, and said, “San Francisco is a very special city, welcoming visitors from all over the world. We say to our visitors, ‘If you want a great experience, go to the Asian Art Museum.’ The Asian has great appeal for our international visitors, and especially here in our Civic Center area, inviting a greater audience to experience all the wonderful things the Asian has to offer.”

Director Jay Xu described the museum’s new vision to act as a catalyst for engaging audiences in discussion and creativity, adding a contemporary dimension to exhibitions of traditional artworks that help audiences connect art to every aspect of their lives. He described how for the first time in its history the Asian will “craft a contemporary art program that makes new connections between masterpieces from our own collection and contemporary art, with concrete, active dialogue between art of the past and art of today.”

Introducing the program was Bay Area artist and Pixar animator Sanjay Patel, whose upcoming collaboration at the museum this fall perfectly illustrates the energy and vitality of the museum’s shift in focus, as it invites artists and audiences to actively engage with its world-renowned collection and innovative exhibitions. Associate Curator of South Asian Art Qamar Adamjee spoke about the upcoming exhibition “Maharaja: The Splendor of India’s Royal Courts” (opening October 21) and how the objects and ideas presented in the exhibition led the museum to invite Patel to respond by creating his own installation in the museum’s galleries. Patel’s installation, titled “Demons and Dudes with ‘Staches: Indian Avatars by Sanjay Patel,” opens in the galleries this November 11.

Akiko Yamazaki, President of the Asian Art Museum Foundation, introduced Nick O’Flaherty, Strategy Director of Wolff Olins, developer of the new branding, who described his work with the Asian as “a dream project.” He said that the design process considered “how visitors look to museums to provide a platform for discussion and interaction. The depths of the offerings of this museum show how it really can be a life-changing experience.”

Also present for the unveiling were San Francisco Supervisors David Chiu, Carmen Chu, and Eric Mar; Protocol Chief Charlotte Shultz; San Francisco Arts Commission President P. J. Johnston; Museum Board members and other representatives of City departments, nonprofit organizations, and numerous media outlets.

A Small Mountain Village Gets Big on Facebook

PR Newswire

CHUR, Switzerland, September 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ –

Now Anybody Can “Become” Swiss

The little mountain village of Obermutten in Graubünden has been on Facebook for a few days and is making an unusual promise. Anyone who goes to http://www.facebook.com/obermutten and clicks on “like” can put his/her photo onto the Commune’s official notice board. By doing this, anybody anywhere in the world can “become Swiss”. After only three days, the village already has fifteen times more fans than residents, and this number is growing by the day.

The identity pictures are printed out by a councillor and pinned up on the noticeboard and the fans thus become part of the village community. The eighty inhabitants – many still without an internet connection – like to get to know their fans in this way. The village has been simply swamped with fan applications. However, the Commune in the Graubünden holiday region has undertaken to keep its promise. Now that the noticeboard is already practically full, new fans are being posted on the wall of a huge barn and the village council is looking for further alternatives.

“Obermutten is developing a personal relationship with its guests. Here it’s not a question of the total volume, but of each individual one. Why shouldn’t this be the same for us in the internet?” asks Martin Wyss, Mutten’s village president. Already many people from all over the world who would like to “become Swiss” are posted on the noticeboard or barn wall.

The village president communicates with his fans in short video messages in an extremely personal way and every day the fans can also find themselves in a picture of the noticeboard.

Government of Canada Has Regained Export Opportunities for the Canola Industry

Posted Friday, September 30, 2011 by admin
Filed under: EU Politics

Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz today welcomed news that the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved a Canadian petition which will significantly expand opportunities for Canadian canola exports to the United States for biodiesel production – a market the Canadian canola industry estimates is worth up to $450 million a year.

The EPA’s approval of the petition will ensure that all approved Canadian biofuel and biofuel feedstock, including canola, meet the requirements of the US Renewable Fuels Standard Program (RFS2).

“This is great news for Canada’s canola industry, and will level the playing field for canola exporters to the US,” said Minister Ritz. “Our Government has worked closely on this issue with Canadian industry, as well as with the U.S. and we’re very pleased with this positive outcome.”

“This announcement provides a valuable opportunity for Canadian canola,” said Canola Council of Canada president JoAnne Buth. “We look forward to increased canola exports for use in biodiesel production.”

The US RFS2, implemented in July 2010, set mandatory volume targets for four new categories of renewable fuels, as well as reduction criteria for greenhouse gas emissions. The program affected the ability for Canadian canola to be used competitively as a feedstock for producing biodiesel sold in the US. This is because a methodology, known as the aggregate approach, was not originally available to Canada (or other countries) as an alternative to cumbersome land-use record-keeping requirements. In January 2011, the Government of Canada submitted a petition to the EPA in support of Canadian compliance to these regulations. Canada’s petition, now approved by the EPA, allows Canadian biofuels and feedstocks, particularly canola, to be utilized under the RFS2.

Factors Moving Markets, Worldwide View – Equity Research on Whiting Petroleum Corporation and Plains Exploration & Production Company

Today, www.WorldStreetFundamentals.com released its industry report highlighting Whiting Petroleum Corporation (NYSE: WLL) and Plains Exploration & Production Company (NYSE: PXP). Full fundamental and technical analysis is available at www.WorldStreetFundamentals.com/Reports.php?id=WLL+PXP.

Continued confidence in long-term U.S. debt is defying S&P’s recent downgrade. Treasury yields continue at their lowest levels since January 1, 2011 as the market moved to “safe investments” weary of the storm clouds ahead. Winds can change however, as a last-minute move to save the U.S. from a historic default on its debt obligations. Attentions are now turned to the situation in Europe, with the health of the Euro in the balance; bankers are looking to prevent defaults on Italian and Spanish debt.

As a result of recent credit adjustments, opportunity is being marked for investors to take advantage of equities with high-margin and specialty products. Market-wise investors are carefully watching for value within equities boasting established pipelines and excellent growth prospects. As part of this process, the following companies have been introduced with initial research reports available online.

World Street Fundamentals has highlighted Whiting Petroleum Corporation for its current position within the basic materials industry. Whiting Petroleum Corporation is an independent oil and gas company. It is engaged in acquisition, development, exploitation, production and exploration activities primarily in the Permian Basin, Rocky Mountains, Mid-Continent, Gulf Coast and Michigan regions of the United States. World Street has featured Plains Exploration & Production Company for its development within the basic materials industry. The upstream business acquires, develops, explores for and produces oil and gas. Its upstream activities are located in the United States. Neste Oil ships operate successfully along the Northeast Passage

Posted Friday, September 30, 2011 by admin
Filed under: World News

ESPOO, FINLAND — (Marketwire) — 09/30/11 —

Neste Oil Corporation
Press Release
30 September 2011 at 4 pm (EET)

Neste Oil ships operate successfully along the Northeast Passage

Two Neste Oil tankers successfully traversed the Northeast Passage between
Murmansk and the Pacific Ocean in August and September this year. Only a
few
vessels including Neste Oil’s ships have operated along the route this
year. The
first Neste Oil tanker to traverse the route was the MT Stena Poseidon,
which
carried a customer’s cargo along the Northeast Passage and onwards to South
Korea. She was followed by the MT Palva, which delivered a customer’s cargo
to a
port in China.

The very challenging ice conditions along the route, which follows Russia’s
northern Arctic coastline, limit its use, and the route continues to be
open to
traffic for only a couple of months in the summer. Neste Oil’s extensive
maritime expertise, decades of experience in navigating in ice-bound
waters, and
fleet of ice-strengthened ships, one of the largest in the world, give the
company a clear edge in shipping along the Northeast Passage.

“Neste Oil has a long history of taking on the challenges of the Northeast
Passage,” says Niko Ristikankare, Vice President of the company’s Shipping
&
Terminals Unit. “The MT Uikku was the first Western commercial vessel to
traverse the route back in 1997. Thanks to our Arctic expertise and our
modern
fleet, we are excellently placed to handle commercial operations along the
Northeast Passage.”

The Russian authorities require that all ships operating along the route
are
ice-classified and fitted with additional equipment, such as radios
approved for
use in Arctic areas and a spare propeller blade. Bunkers and provisions
sufficient for 30 days at sea are also required because of the
unpredictable
nature of ice conditions along the route.

Potential to halve shipping times

The approx. 6,250 nautical miles or 11,500 kilometers covered by the Stena
Poseidon and Palva from Murmansk to the Pacific took around 20 days at a
speed
of 13 knots. The alternative route through the Suez Canal is twice as long
and
takes twice as long as a result. Using the much shorter Northeast Passage
offers
both reduced fuel consumption and reduced overall emissions.

“Our journey from Murmansk to the Bering Strait took nine days, escorted by
a
Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker and a local ice pilot,” says Jari Leino,
Captain of the Stena Poseidon. “We spotted ice along the route but were
able to
avoid the larger floes thanks to the open water conditions that prevailed
this
summer. All in all, it was a unique experience.”
